# ownbackend docs

ownbackend gives the app you're building a backend (a database, an API,
sign-in, file storage and live updates) that runs on your own device: a
laptop, a desktop, or an always-on computer. Your app is online at
`https://<name>.ownbackend.app`, and the relay in between emails you when it
goes offline and keeps encrypted backups.

- [Quickstart](/docs/quickstart.md): install, create a backend, put it online.
- [Using your backend from an app](/docs/api.md): the address, the API and
the SDK, sign-in, data rules, live updates, files, and the answers you get
  when the device is offline.
- [MCP server for AI agents](/docs/mcp.md): let your agent create the backend
  and design its data.
- [Running on your device](/docs/devices.md): staying online, running in the
background, backups and restoring, moving to another device.
